Frequently Asked Questions

What documents do I need for an ILR application?

The documents you need depend on your visa type, but generally include: your current passport and BRP, proof of continuous residence (utility bills, bank statements), employment evidence (payslips, P60, employer letter), English language test certificate, Life in the UK test certificate, and the completed application form (SET(O) for work routes, SET(M) for spouse routes). Some routes require additional documents like a Certificate of Sponsorship or financial evidence.

Which application form do I use for ILR?

For work-based visa routes (Skilled Worker, Health & Care Worker, Global Talent), you use form SET(O). For spouse/partner routes, you use form SET(M). For naturalisation (British Citizenship), you use Form AN. EU Settlement Scheme applications use a separate online-only process with no application fee.

Do I need to prove my English language ability for ILR?

Yes, most ILR applicants need to prove English at B1 level or above using an approved test (IELTS for UKVI, Trinity College GESE, or equivalent). You're exempt if you're a national of a majority English-speaking country, hold a UK degree taught in English, or are over 65. The test must be from an approved provider and on the approved list.

How long are my ILR documents valid?

Validity varies: bank statements should be no more than 28 days old at submission. The Life in the UK test certificate is valid indefinitely. English language test certificates are typically valid for 2 years. Your passport must be valid throughout the application. Employer letters should be as recent as possible — ideally within the last month.

Can I submit my ILR application without all the documents?

It's strongly advised to submit all required documents with your application to avoid delays or refusal. The Home Office may request additional documents after submission, but this extends processing time. If you genuinely cannot obtain a specific document, include a detailed explanation letter explaining why and what alternative evidence you're providing instead.
