Frequently Asked Questions

What are the absence rules for British Citizenship (naturalisation)?

To qualify for British Citizenship by naturalisation, you must not have been absent from the UK for more than 450 days in the 5 years before your application. Additionally, you must not have been absent for more than 90 days in the final 12 months before applying. Both limits must be met.

When can I apply for British Citizenship after getting ILR?

You can normally apply for British Citizenship 12 months after receiving ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain). If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, you may be able to apply immediately after receiving ILR, without the 12-month wait.

What is the '5 years to the day' presence requirement?

You must have been physically present in the UK exactly 5 years before the date of your citizenship application. If you were abroad on that exact date, your application date needs to shift forward to a date where you were present in the UK 5 years prior. This is checked in addition to the 450-day and 90-day absence limits.

How much does British Citizenship cost?

The citizenship application fee is £1,605, plus a £130 citizenship ceremony fee, totalling £1,735. There is no priority processing option for citizenship. You may also need to budget for the Life in the UK test (£50) and an English language test (£150–£180) if not already completed for ILR.

Do I need to pass the Life in the UK test again for citizenship?

If you already passed the Life in the UK test for your ILR application, you do not need to take it again for citizenship. The test result is valid indefinitely. If you haven't taken it yet, you'll need to pass before applying for naturalisation.
